RANGOLI -Geometrical Pattern.
Rangoli is geometrical designs created by dots. For example,11 rows by 11 columns.
You can make it as big as you want or as small according to your requirement.
These designs are very common in front of a South Indian house and are made out of rice flour. For festive occasions these patterns are filled with colours and different flowers too.
Method:
1. Clean the surface of your porcelain canvas with alcohol.I have used a ceramic tile.
2. You can trace the design or you can draw it with dots.
3. Mask the patter with red resist. Use a wet cotton-bud to clean up immediately.Let it dry.
4. I have used stickers for the border on both sides of the tile. Measure it on both sides and stick the stickers.
5. I have used Rouge de fer (degussa) Iron red mixed with fat oil to a toothpaste consistency.I have added lavender oil to dilute it.The colour is slightly more diluted than what I normally use to paint, because I will sponge the colour. The colour is easier to spread if it is more diluted. Once the colour is thoroughly mixed I have added couple of drops of clove oil so that it stays open for a longer time.
Note: It is prudent to make enough colour to cover the entire surface.Otherwise the sponged colour will dry by the time you make the next batch of colour.
6. I have used a sponge to apply the colour uniformly.
7. Before you dry it, pull off the red resist with a sharp tweezer.This is very interesting and fun to do. You will see the design appear as you pull the red resist. Pull of the stickers too.You will see the white design on the red tile.
8. With the big wipe out tool clean up the white design and make sure the lines are uniform.You can also use a wet cotton bud to clean the white area.You can also make dots with the wipe out tool in between the loops as in the design and the centre point.
9. Dry the tile with a hair dryer.
10. Fire it at 800 degrees celsius.
Note: You can also use brown red,pompadour or any other colour of your choice.
These geometrical patterns can be used to paint on your dinner plates or sides of the vases etc.,
